I know no one's posted here in forever. And I don't even live in Seattle anymore! So often I think to myself, man I'd like to go to Trabant. But it's um 2500 miles away.
Anyway, I was watching The Secret Life of... on the Food Network and the subject is coffee. And they highlighted Intelligentsia! They spent a pretty long time on it. Then they went to Seattle (Intelligentsia's in Chicago) after the commercial break, but of course they just did Starbucks, and didn't give any time to the independent coffee-houses that make Seattle so great.
There's seriously nowhere near my house that's anything like Trabant, Sure Shot, that cupcake place in Ballard... uhhh... this is just me remembering nice coffee spots I went to in Seattle. After I'd gotten so used to reading and writing papers at Trabant, I couldn't do homework at home anymore, and got in the habit of doing it at the *one* Starbucks location a reasonable distance from my house (if you don't count the drive-thru), because it was the best I could do as far as a comfortable, relaxed, and laptop-friendly ambiance.
Wednesday morning I'm going to start training at a brand new Chock Cafe
location pretty close to home. I am kind of excited about being a barista. I hope it works out! I want to move back to Seattle when I can, and I'm hoping with the experience I'll have an easy time finding right-away employment there since baristas are always in demand.
Well, I wrote more than I thought I would. To those of you I know, I miss you guys. Hey, did the new location in Cap Hill (I think?) open yet? Is the upstairs of the U District one set up yet? Heh. I'm still bi-coastal, I like to know these things.

Thanksgiving Pies for John
Many of you remember the lovely shortbreads that we used to carry, baked by Sugar in West Seattle. The reason we have not had these for several months is that John, one of Sugar's owners, is battling with testicular cancer. He has racked up over $75,000 in medical bills so far, and does not have insurance. Sugar is having a fund raiser for John, selling pies on their website for $20 each. You can help (and get a pie!) by visiting http://www.sugardelights.com
. You may also make a donation there, as well.
For your convenience, you can also order your pie at Trabant. The price will still be $20, as all proceeds will go to Sugar. You must place your order by Sunday, November 19 at midnight. Pies will then be available for pickup at Trabant in the afternoon of Wednesday, November 22.
Get a delicious holiday pie, and help out our friends at Sugar!

They have me hooked on La Tortuga. I never thought I'd be able to drink coffee black. It has rendered all the grocery store coffee in my house obsolete. We dont want to throw it out, but I personally dont want to drink anythign thats not La Tortuga!
Life can be so hard.

We should encourage our stunning and beloved trabant owners to get AC. Think of all the extra business they'd get in the summer!

Vote for your favorite coffee shop!
It's that time of year again to make your favorite coffee shop known. There are two votes going on right now:
1) Seattle Weekly "Best of Seattle" - seattleweekly.com/bestofseattle. You can only vote once, and have until 11 PM on July 16 to do so. Tons of categories, but you don't have to fill them all in. Make sure to fill in ..25 Best Independent Coffee house!
2) Citysearch's "Best of" - seattle.citysearch.com... find the coffee category. You guys made us ..1 in 2005! Let's go for two years in a row! You can vote once per day, per computer. Vote as many times as you can!
Thanks so much. You guys are the best ever! If we win, I promise we'll have a party.

Furthest Day to X-Mas party thingie
Is anyone going to this? It's on Sunday, and I have about 6 drinks to buy before I hit the elusive 5 free drink mark, so I was wondering if it was worth going wild and buying chai like it's 1999 in order to get a ticket to the party.

Hmm...I think I remember asking this a long time ago
...But I did ask if putting money on my account would be considered profits and thusly partially donated to Doctors Without Borders on Monday. Putting money on my account didnt count as a sale therefore it couldnt be counted as a profit for tax reasons and what not. I guess they decided to give more than just 5%, I dont know how much though.
anyways, a correspondence about Intelligentsia and fair trade involving the vice president and green coffee buyer: ( Read more...Collapse )

to whom it may concern...
For those of you who may be interested, this upcoming St. Patty's (the 17th, a Friday) is an exciting day. It's Tatiana's 25th birthday, as well as her four year anniversary with Trent (owner Mike G.); extra romantic since they got *married* less than three weeks ago (right before they left for South America)! Awww...
Some of my fellow Trabanters and I plan to send them some good tequila and/or irish cream, and probably flowers, too - drop us a comment if you want to get in on that action, or congratulate her/them in your own unique way! Let the good times roll. :) Current Mood: jubilant

Trabant featured in USA Today!
From USA Today:
Tatiana Becker, co-owner of the Trabant Chai Lounge in Seattle, is one of the sample-tasting converts. When she's fixing a drink for herself, she says, "I make what I call a Vanilla Rooibos" (a red South African tea): She brews the maté in vanilla syrup, then adds the tea and lets it all steep. Some customers like to sweeten the straight maté with honey.
"Our bulk order keeps going up," she says. "We have three brewing baskets in our espresso machine, and one is dedicated to maté." The lounge has a monthly tango night, and dancers "are really into maté."
Trabant sells it retail as well — in 16 tea-bag boxes ($6.95) or half-pound bags.
"We also carry a Guayaki kit that has the loose mix, the gourd, the bombilla and an instruction booklet," Becker says.

Lorrie and Tatiana competed in the Northwest Barista Competition. Seventeen fine baristas from the Northwest made shots, cappuccinos, and specialty drinks for the judges. I posted a play-by-play (sort of) in my own journal, but the bottom line is: Lorrie placed 7th (one spot off from making it into the finals!), thirteen points away from being 6th, and she went 40 seconds over the time limit which knocked at LEAST twenty points off... so at the next competition, she has an excellent chance. Ask her about the "Abracadabra" if you get the chance! Tatiana's specialty drink was called "Hot Date on the Town", which may end up on the Trabant menu. It was delicious, and she placed 10th. For their first ever competition, we were very impressed! So, if you happen to get the chance, go ahead and congratulate them on a job well done. :)

I somehow knew that there would be a LJ community for this place. In honovr of the time and money I've spent here, and in tribute to the thousands upon thousands of words that were put "to paper" while sitting at this place, I've dug up some enlightening posts I've made evangelizing Trabant in another forum. Oh, the things that fly off my fingertips sometimes...( cut... for your browsing pleasureCollapse )
Go check out Trabant's Halloween decor... it took many monkeys many hours of standing on things!
